Copenhagen: bars

Copenhagen has so many cool bars, you’re spoilt for choice. From natural wine hangouts to live jazz bars, here are some of our favourite spots in the city.

Ruby / Indre By

A visit to Ruby is a must, voted one of the world’s top 50 bars and it’s easy to see why. This cool little cocktail bar is set within an 18th-century townhouse overlooking the canal. Take a seat at the bar or by the window seats in the Scandi-style front room or hide away in the moody back room on a leather armchair with a Moscow Mule under the dimly lit lighting. Cosy, intimate and perfect for a date night.

Pompette / Nørrebro

Nestled in the streets of the Nørrebro neighbourhood, Pompette is a natural wine bar serving small dishes with a great vibe. Literally meaning ‘tipsy’ in French, Pompette lives up to its name with so many wines to choose from (they offer one wine of each variety by the glass). You can also go into the cellar to choose from one of the many bottles they have. The outdoor seating… A firm favourite and a go-to if you’re in Copenhagen.

Lidkoeb / Vesterbro

The sister bar to Ruby, Lidkoeb is a cocktail and whisky bar hidden away in a back alley. Set in an old pharmacy production facility with a courtyard equipped with open fireplaces and leather seats with sheepskin throws, this place screams chalet-chic. The cocktail bar on the ground floor is a bright and airy space with arched windows and always a buzzing crowd. Upstairs under the attic is the dark and moody whisky bar with dimly lit lighting making it more intimate and the perfect place for a nightcap.

Bar Vivant / Nørrebro

Bar Vivant is a natural wine bar and bottle shop in Nørrebro. With bottles lining the walls and stunning, simplistic interiors. It’s always a good vibe and on the cutest little street with lots of cute stores to explore.

Ved Stranden 10 / Indre By

We love Ved Stranden, a wine bar with outdoor seating overlooking the canal. There’s no menu, you describe what you like to the staff and they will pair you with a wine that fits your preferences or if you’re looking to explore, leave it up to them to introduce you to a hidden gem. The bar changes its wines according to the season and does a weekly tasting night every Wednesday. Easily one of our favourite spots, especially on a summer’s day.

Villette / Nørrebro

Similar to Pompette (it’s run by the same people) and also in the Nørrebro neighbourhood, Villette is a restaurant and bar with a great natural wine selection (it’s no surprise by now that Copenhagen loves its natural wine). The restaurant serves seasonal dishes with locally sourced ingredients. However, even if you’re not here for the food, their courtyard's cosy and casual vibe and delicious cocktails make Villette a cool hangout spot for meeting up with friends.

Lille Blå / Indre By

A gorgeous little natural wine bar near the city centre with the bluest walls you’ve ever seen, colourful artwork and stacked wine boxes lining the walls, this place feels like it could be an art gallery or studio. From the same people behind Ved Stranden 10, Lille Blå follows the same concept of describing your preferences to the knowledgeable staff and letting them pick out something for you to try from their collection. The bar has a cool, Scandinavian-laidback feel with wooden stools and tables and outdoor seating for those warmer months and is an ideal choice for a drink before or after pre/post-dinner drink.

Ancestrale / Vesterbro

A chic wine bar and restaurant in Vesterbro. Like most places in Copenhagen, it’s only small but definitely memorable with a strong Danish design element, it feels warm and homely. The staff know their thing when it comes to wine and cocktails. The cocktails are seasonal and the wines are sourced from Europe and are mostly natural, organic or biodynamic but all delicious (as well as the food we hear).

Yellow / Nørrebro

Yellow is a good all-rounder. A cool neighbourhood bar serving amazing cocktails, natural wine, craft beer and small plates that comes alive on the weekend with DJs. It can switch the vibe from chilled to party real fast.

Andra / Nørrebro

A wine bar and eatery on the corner of Stefansgade in the heart of Nørrebro. This place is always busy, especially on a summer’s day with people filling the terrace and spilling out onto the streets. Andra has a relaxed atmosphere, serving small plates and European-inspired dishes.

Tata / Indre By

Tata is an award-winning cocktail bar found in Hotel Sanders, around the corner from The Royal Danish Theatre and named after the red velvet curtain that boasts amazing drinks and luxurious interiors. The decor makes a change from the usual Scandi-style with the hotel having a decadent, mid-century feel that gives New York rather than Copenhagen. The bar is cosy and intimate and perfect for a date night.

Silo / Nordhavn

If you’re looking for a rooftop vibe then head to Silo, a restaurant and bar above the skyline in the Nordhaven area with crafted house cocktails and an impressive wine menu. The cuisine is inspired by New Nordic and the decor is minimalist and chic in the way Copenhagen does best. The 360 views of the city make it the perfect backdrop for your night out.

Apollo Bar / Indre By

Located just off of Nyhavn canal, Apollo Bar comes alive on the weekends with live music, small plates and amazing cocktails in the coolest spot in Kunsthal Charlottenborg, a contemporary art gallery so it’s no wonder the interiors are so good. The courtyard also hosts events such as the Copenhagen Jazz Festival and flea markets.

Duck and Cover / Vesterbro

A cocktail bar in Vesterbro, full of vintage furniture and leather and wooden accents. Duck and Cover has a relaxing, laidback atmosphere in contrast to its buzzing neighbourhood and is the ideal place to go for a pit stop or a nightcap. The interiors invite you in but the cocktails make you not want to leave.

Dannebrogsgade 6, 1660 København, Denmark

@duckandcoverbar

Autopoul / Nordvest

From the outside Autopoul looks very unassuming but this bar in Nordvest which is only open during the warmer months has the best atmosphere. Set in what used to be an old auto mechanic premises, Autopoul stays true to its roots without changing much to the venue. The courtyard has plastic tables and chairs giving a Southern European vibe. Not the most glamorous but it feels authentic and has a good crowd.

Hejrevej 31, 2400 København, Denmark

La Fontaine / Indre By

We love a jazz club and La Fontaine is the oldest jazz venue in the city. With live music and jam sessions every weekend, this place is truly atmospheric and feels like it should belong in New York or Paris. It’s small and intimate with only a 100-person capacity but it makes it all the more special. Get here early for a table as it doesn’t accept reservations and immerse yourself in the ambience.

Kompagnistræde 11, 1208 København, Denmark

@lafontainecph

Jazz enthusiasts unite. Immerse yourself in the vibrant sounds of live music at this iconic venue which opened in 1959 where world-class musicians captivate audiences with soulful performances in intimate settings reminiscent of the city's rich jazz heritage. The jazz house presents world-class jazz every Thursday, Friday and Saturday so grab a drink and listen to some of the best jazz music the city has to offer in a cosy and intimate atmosphere.

Grand Joanne / Vesterbro

A newish hotel in Vesterbro with a rooftop bar, open from April onwards to welcome in those Summer months when the city well and truly comes alive. The decor is fun and feminine with the pink and yellow colour scheme, striped parasols and terrazzo tables. Spend an afternoon up on the rooftop; sipping wine, soaking up the sunshine and listening to the resident DJ before going out for dinner. The rooftop sets the tone for the hotel; a cool and buzzy space that gives Grand Joanne that USP.

@grandjoannecph

Soho House / Indre By

Soho House located at the old Customs House on the city’s harbour front, there’s a Cecconi’s restaurant and outdoor terrace overlooking the water with interiors to die for (we didn’t expect anything less), Soho House Copenhagen is the ideal place for morning, noon and night.
